CULPHO is a tiny parish of scattered farms and cottages (see map), set in the heart of the Suffolk countryside. It has never had a large population; there were 73 people living here in 1732, 51 in 1874 and 71 in 1901. The 1991 census gave the population as 48. Its unusual and intriguing name is thought by some experts to have indicated the 'Hoh', or spur of land, belonging to a Saxon landowner called Cupwolf. Its small church is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086.
